The Perfect Long Weekend in Napier
The Ultimate Long Weekend Itinerary for exploring the Hawkes Bay region
Thinking about having a long weekend away? Napier and the Hawke’s Bay region, on New Zealand’s North Island, is a fabulous choice. Known for its stunning Art Deco architecture, sun-soaked vineyards, and beautiful coastal landscapes, this area is ideal for those looking to relax, explore, and enjoy some world-class wine—all easily accessible by bus, foot, or bike.
Here’s how you can make the most of your long weekend in Napier and the Hawke’s Bay:
Day 1: Arrive in Napier and experience the Art Deco charm
Napier is famous for its unique Art Deco style, rebuilt after the 1931 earthquake that caused most of the buildings in the city centre to be levelled. Arriving by InterCity bus, you’ll dropped off right in the heart of town on Carlyle Street, where you can start exploring Napier's unique architecture straight away on foot.
Our recommendation of things to see and do:
- Art Deco Walking Tour: Take a guided walking tour through the city’s streets to fully appreciate Napier’s Art Deco history. You’ll learn about the town’s architectural revival and its significance.
- Napier’s Marine Parade: A stunning waterfront promenade, perfect for a leisurely walk or bike ride. Check out the Sunken Gardens, the Pania of the Reef statue, and stop for a coffee with ocean views.
- National Aquarium of New Zealand: A short walk from the city centre, the National Aquarium is a great place to see and learn more about marine life, and you can see which little penguin have been awarded 'Penguin of the Month'!
Day 2: Wine and Cycle in the Hawke’s Bay
Hawke’s Bay is renowned for its vineyards, and there’s no better way to explore them than by bike! Hop on a bus to nearby Hastings or Havelock North, where you can hop on a bike and set out on one of the area’s many guided cycling wine tours.
Here's some of our favourite wineries in the region:
- Te Mata Estate: One of New Zealand’s oldest wineries, Te Mata offers tastings of their famous reds in a stunning setting.
- Black Barn Vineyards: Known for its picturesque location and cellar door, Black Barn is a must-visit for those who enjoy wine with a view.
- The Craggy Range Winery: Nestled under the impressive Te Mata Peak, Craggy Range is a beautiful place to relax with a glass of wine and take in the landscape.
Day 3: Explore Nearby Towns and Cape Kidnappers
For your last day, take a guided tour out to Cape Kidnappers—a dramatic headland famous for its gannet colony and coastal views. You can either hike the route (about 3-4 hours round trip) or join a guided tour to get up close to the birds. The scenic beauty is worth the trip, and it’s a refreshing way to end your weekend.
After your coastal adventure, make time to visit or re-visit some of the nearby towns:
- Havelock North: Known for its laid-back, village feel, Havelock North is great for a relaxing lunch, local shopping, and boutique wineries.
- Hastings: Just a 20-minute bus ride from Napier, Hastings has a thriving weekend farmers' market where you can sample some of the best local produce, from fresh fruit to artisan goods.
- Ahuriri: A trendy waterfront suburb of Napier, Ahuriri is perfect for a coffee stop or afternoon stroll along its charming streets. With art galleries, cafes, and a lively marina, it’s a lovely way to wind down your day.
Whether you’ve been cycling between wineries, wandering Art Deco streets, or exploring coastal headlands, Napier is a perfect destination for a laid-back yet adventure-filled weekend. With buses connecting you to the region’s highlights, you can leave the car behind and enjoy a stress-free, scenic weekend.
