Scenic South: Our ultimate 14-day journey around the South Island
New Zealand’s South Island offers some of the world’s most breathtaking landscapes and unforgettable experiences and our Scenic South TravelPass will take you through the island’s iconic locations. You can start and finish the trip wherever you like, but we suggest starting and ending in Christchurch. Along the way, you’ll explore glaciers, scenic coastal towns, and the Southern Alps. Here’s a 14-day itinerary to help you make the most of your adventure.
Day 1–3: Christchurch – The Garden City
Your journey begins in Christchurch, a city known for its resilience and beauty. Take time to explore the city before heading into the more remote parts of the South Island.
- Botanic Gardens: Wander through the lush, beautifully maintained gardens.
- Punting on the Avon: Enjoy a leisurely boat ride along the Avon River.
- Urban art tours: Discover the creative energy that has flourished in Christchurch since the earthquakes, with murals and street art all around the city.

Day 3–7: Queenstown – The Adventure Capital
Head south from Christchurch to Queenstown, an 8-hour bus journey through stunning countryside, with a rest stop in Tekapo where you can snap a pic of the iconic Church of the Good Shepard. Nestled on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown is known for adventure sports and spectacular views.
- Day trip to Milford Sound: As part of your TravelPass, you can enjoy a scenic day tour including a cruise of the world-famous Milford Sound.
- Adrenaline activities: Try bungy jumping, luging, or even skydiving.
- Skyline Gondola: Take the gondola up Bob’s Peak for panoramic views.
- Wine tour: Spend an afternoon tasting some of the best wines in the Gibbston Valley.

Day 7-8: Franz Josef – Ice Adventure
Leave Queenstown and head northwest up the West Coast to Franz Josef (approx. 8 hours). Franz Josef is famous for its ancient glacier surrounded by lush rainforests.
- Glacier hike: Take a guided glacier heli-hike or helicopter tour for an unforgettable experience.
- Hot Pools: After a day of exploring, relax in the wood-fired hot tubs surrounded by rainforest.
Suggested stay: 1 night to experience the glacier and soak in the pools.
Day 8-9: Greymouth – Coastal Beauty
From Franz Josef, the bus journey takes 4 hours north to Greymouth, the largest town on the West Coast. Your tour will make a stop in Hokitika, where you can see see the dramatic beach and visit excellent local cafes, before carrying on to Greymouth.
- Shantytown Heritage Park: Learn about the region’s gold mining history at this interactive park.
- Monteith’s Brewery: Enjoy a tour and tasting at one of New Zealand’s oldest breweries.
Suggested stay: 1 night to explore Greymouth’s history and natural beauty.
Day 9–11: Nelson – The Sunshine Capital
Next, it’s a 5-hour 45-minute bus journey to Nelson, known for its arts scene and proximity to the Abel Tasman National Park.
- Abel Tasman National Park: Spend a day hiking or kayaking through pristine beaches and forests.
- Arts and culture: Visit local galleries or the famous World of Wearable Art and Classic Car Museum.
- Relax: Soak in the sun at Tahunanui Beach or stroll around the city centre.
Suggested stay: 2 nights to enjoy the national park and local vibes.
Day 12-13: Picton – Marlborough Sounds
Head northeast to Picton (approx. 2 hours from Nelson), the gateway to the beautiful Marlborough Sounds.
- Cruise the Marlborough Sounds: Take a boat tour to explore hidden coves and spot wildlife.
- Queen Charlotte Track: Hike or bike this iconic trail, offering stunning coastal views.
Suggested stay: 1 night to relax and enjoy the serenity of the Sounds.
Day 13-14: Kaikōura – Marine Life and Scenic Views
From Picton, take a scenic 2-hour 15-minute bus trip along the coast to Kaikōura, famous for its marine wildlife and dramatic coastal landscapes.
- Whale watching: Hop on a boat to see the magnificent sperm whales that inhabit the waters year-round.
- Seal colony: Walk along the Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway and spot seals basking on the rocks.
- Seafood: Treat yourself to fresh crayfish/lobster at one of the local seafood restaurants.
Suggested stay: 1 night to enjoy whale watching and the local wildlife.
Day 14: Return to Christchurch
It’s time to complete the loop with a 3-hour bus journey back to Christchurch. You can spend an extra day here relaxing or revisiting any sights you might have missed at the start of your trip.
