About Christchurch

Known as the Garden City, Ōtautahi Christchurch has long been famous for its English-style architecture and beautiful gardens. However, sadly in 2011 a destructive earthquake ravaged the city causing widespread destruction to much of the city's character buildings. Christchurch is slowly rebuilding and many exciting new initiatives are taking shape amongst the ruins.

The spirit of the people in Christchurch is strong and visitors will be impressed by the development and rebuild of Christchurch, with a range of innovative new public spaces and building projects rising up, including a cathedral made of cardboard!

Christchurch is located on the eastern coast of the central South Island, meaning the beach is located very close to the city centre. Some of the popular beaches include Corsair Bay, Waikuku Beach or Taylors Mistake where you can surf or boogie board the rough waves! Children will enjoy a day running around and swimming at any one of Christchurch's beaches.

There are many adventurous activities on offer in Christchurch. You could try jet boating, canyon swinging, skydiving or quad biking and with the forest, the sea and the ski slopes located nearby, there's no shortage of adventure in Christchurch.

If you'd prefer to keep yourself safely on solid ground, why not take a walk around the city centre of Christchurch. You can visit the Canterbury Museum, the Christchurch Art Gallery or take a walk through Hagley Park and the Botanic Gardens.
