About Kaikoura

The name Kaikoura means 'meal of crayfish' (kai - food/meal, kōura - crayfish) and the crayfish industry still plays a role in the economy of the region. Regarded as one of New Zealand's leading nature tourist destinations, Kaikoura offers a variety of exciting sperm whale and dolphin encounters.

In November 2016 a severe earthquake caused damage to the roads surrounding Kaikoura  - however, the inland route south of Kaikoura is open again. Kaikoura's businesses are up and running and ready to welcome visitors!

Despite the recent rise in tourist numbers, the town retains much of its historical charm, making Kaikoura extremely attractive to artists. Their work, inspired by the remarkable landscape and wildlife, can be seen all over town.

Kaikoura specialises in marine wildlife encounters, a trip to Kaikoura is not complete until you've been on one of the whale watching tours!

You can also learn more about the history and culture of Kaikoura by taking part in an intimate guided Maori tour.
