About Palmerston North

Palmerston North is one of the country’s largest provincial cities and is often referred to as “Palmy” by the locals. The city is situated on the eastern Manawatu Plains, near the north bank of the Manawatu River.

Palmerston North has a historic presence throughout the city. Many of the original stores built in the 1920s and 1930s, have been restored and are used today as boutiques, cafes and restaurants.

Located near the city is the largest generating wind farm in the southern hemisphere.  The wind farm powers over 30,000 homes and uses a total of 158 turbines located in the Tararua and Ruahine Ranges. The Te Apiti wind farm offers a lookout where you can get up close to one of the gigantic turbines and view the surreal view into the horizon. This is completely free and is a fantastic option for those that are after a perfect photo opportunity.
