Highlights

  • Step back in time on a vintage steam train
  • Relax and unwind on a 2 hour return journey

The Kingston Flyer is an iconic vintage steam train that departs the picturesque town of Kingston in the South Island of New Zealand. Located only 40 minutes from Queenstown, the train is powered by the mighty Ab795 steam locomotive and takes passengers on a 1.5-2 hour return journey through some of the most beautiful scenery in the region.

On the journey, you will travel from the sparkling lake on the Kingston foreshore, past alpine mountains, and into the green pastures of Southland. You will also get to learn about the history of the train and the area through commentary from the onboard staff, chat to our friendly drivers, roam the vintage carriages, and get close enough to touch the steam engine.

When the train arrives at Fairlight Railway Station, all passengers disembark for a 20 minute turn around. During this time you can use the facilities, take photos, enjoy complimentary tea and coffee, purchase merchandise or watch the steam locomotive turn around. Children are encouraged to "race the engine" by running along the fenced area. its a lot of fun!!

Such a fun experience!

If you love old steam trains, this is a must! You go back in time sitting in the carriage, and the steam and loud whistle are the best. A lovely hot cuppa waits for you at Fairlight, and I got the chance to race against the train after the driver had changed its direction! What a once in a lifetime experience and the staff are great giving their time for free. Love love love!

Superb experience. Friendly staff, who were really helpful when I dropped my phone. It was easy to get the tickets organised via BookMe. Only disappointment was that a tour group had booked out the best carriage but there was still plenty of space to stand outside and experience the full atmosphere.
