Larnach Castle - Dunedin's Must See Visitor Attraction!
William Larnach built Larnach Castle for his beloved wife over 150 years ago and it stands proud as New Zealand’s castle.
15 years of painstaking construction by master craftsmen made this building a majestic and imposing mansion, and one of the most iconic buildings in the country. The castle is symbolic of Dunedin’s rich history and heritage and a visit to it is a must-do for locals and visitors alike.
The castle has had many uses in its time, from mental asylum, to a hospital for soldiers, to a nun's retreat. The ballroom was once even used as a holding pen for sheep long before the current owners took on the mammoth task of restoring the castle to its former glory.
