Perfect for family fun and snorkeling, Fitzroy Island is beautiful, uncrowded and unspoilt and just a short ferry ride from Cairns.
The reef is very close to the beach and protected by Marine National Park. It is home to Turtles, Clown fish and both hard and soft corals.
Visit the beach hire for snorkeling gear, stand up paddle boards, paddle skis, ocean trampoline, kayak hire and glass bottom boat tours.
Things to do on Fitzroy Island:

Child (4 - 14 years) $49 + $5 reef levy (0-4 free of charge)

Apart from being told to board a different boat and waiting 20 minutes before being directed to the correct boat, we had an amazing time. Be prepared to pay for a stinger suit (we went in February) and I'd recommend taking your own fully functioning snorkel and goggles, however if you book for one of the guided snorkeling trips, you get these at 50% off. Take shoes to wear on the coral beach and take food - there is a store there which is really expensive - the restaurant is for resort guests only. They do have eftpos which is handy. Absolutely loved the island - probably could have gone home an hour earlier, but a wonderful day, wonderful scenery, gorgeous fish, sea turtles, stingrays (hooray no crocs!!). You'll enjoy it.
This was the second time we did this tour. It's a great day out from Cairns. We love the fact that the reef is so accessible and allows family members to either go snorkeling, sunbathe, or have a drink without all having to do the same thing at the time. Fitzroy Island is beautiful. It doesn't take long to get there which is a plus if you're prone to motion sickness. It's good value for money too. Highly recommended.
Family fun, we all enjoyed the day on the island, including all my children!
Snorkeling was ok, nothing like the Great Barrier Reef. Staff was ok, seems to respond more to the younger females.
